Overview Summer Dissertation
The 600 hr MSc. individual research project is a major
piece of work designed to provide the student with
an opportunity to carry out a comprehensive, indepth research study of a new or novel topic relevant
to the field of Engineering or Engineering
Management.
This helps students to develop knowledge in a
specialised area to a greater extent than is done
elsewhere in the course.
AEM Dissertation Launch 8
Overview Summer Dissertation
The work will normally include:
1. Planning and undertaking novel / new research to increase the general
base of knowledge.
2. The identification of a new problem, and a clear statement of Aim and
Objectives
3. An extensive background literature regarding the problem and the
current research gap
4. The selection of appropriate justified methodologies for gathering
information / data.
5. The gathering and processing of robust information
6. The critical presentation of results, analysis & discussion and the
generation of some useful conclusions and recommendations,
7. Demonstrating the satisfaction of the Aim an Objectives.

60 Credits (600 hrs work) leading to a 5000 word report
Word count is from the “start of the introduction” to the “end of the
conclusions”. Guidelines are on CANVAS.
A succinct journal paper in 5000 valuable words !
Compile all that you need to say (e.g. 8,000 – 12,000 words) then do
Value engineering – keep the value but reduce the number of words.
It is NOT an essay.
It is a student’s own responsibility to become familiar with the
requirements for the completion of their dissertation.
Once you have read the CANVAS course and followed the links,
if you are still in doubt then please ask your supervisor.
There are examples of good projects on the CANVAS site.
AEM Dissertation Launch 13
Question 2
What grade are you aiming for with confidence?
A) Distinction 70%+
B) Merit 60 – 69%
C) Pass 50 – 59%
(You may want to push higher with your supervisor’s
assistance – that’s ok!)

Assessment Report (80% of final mark)
2 parts: Assignment (Report) and Defence (Q&A)
a) Assessment 80% Submission
b) Assessment 20% Questions & Answers
Final reports will ideally be marked by two independent reviewers (tbc)
Dissertation Submission date Monday 29th August 23:59
Please do not leave it until the last minute to try and submit!
TIP: Complete your report in its entirety – ready to “press
submit” a few days before.
Then sleep on it – so your sub-conscience can then remember
all the extra bits you wanted to check.
Extra bits = Extra marks ?
BUT DON’T SUBMIT LATE !!
(5% penalty per day late [I.e. 30
th August = 1 day late])
AEM Dissertation Launch 17
Q&A (20% of final mark)
(both Remote and face to face)
Q&A dates (approx.) 5th September 2022 onwards.
TIP: Practice your 3 minutes talk in English – time it to 3
minutes.
In front of a mirror
With a timer (clock)
Over SKYPE to your friends…
To get practice and maybe some feedback
Ask yourself “What are the key points that you want to say?”
e.g. from your abstract. Use all 3 minutes to “sell your thesis
highlights”
TIP: Have a timer running when you do the presentation for
the Q&A to ensure you use you time wisely.

Project Outline: Peer Review
The unknown often reduces our confidence….
What is the examiner looking for?
What is the standard that we are aiming for?
How do I form a good project?
How increase your confidence?
AEM Dissertation Launch 21
Project Outline: Peer Review
We have formulated a Formative Assignment for you
to remove some of the unknowns
– Safe environment – no penalties
So you can formulate your ideas and get some feedback
So you can look at an use the “M Level” assessment criteria
So you can get an idea of what the examiner may be looking
for…
AEM Dissertation Launch 22
A) The purpose of the project outline formative
assessment is to help you get the very best start
to your dissertation
B) We will use a process recommended by the
Higher Education Futures institute (HEFi) – peer

Project Outline: Peer Review Process
Doing the Project
Please don’t underestimate how much work goes into creating
a research paper for an excellent MSc. or publication.
600hrs = 40 hrs x 15 weeks (full time)
Plan for success…
Anticipate that the need for interviews / questionnaires have to fit
around respondents. It may take 3+ weeks to organise / get a response
Anticipate that supervisors may take time to respond to your questions
Anticipate that supervisors may take time to respond to your need to get
approval of questions / interviews BEFORE you ask them
Anticipate that things may need to be fixed and re-submitted
Anticipate that people (including yourself) may not be available due to
sickness or holiday or other commitments (wedding…?)
AEM Dissertation Launch 32
An example Plan (You do your own !!)
AEM Dissertation Launch 33
Earn your breaks…..
TOP TIP:
Earn your breaks by working hard!
(A couple days off etc…)
Don’t take your breaks then PANIC because its
more work than you expected….
AEM Dissertation Launch 34
You will need to fill in some forms..
If a student’s topic requires asking anyone any questions.
They
MUST complete a Full Ethical Review AND submit all
your questions to their supervisor
AND receive their
approval to proceed
BEFORE sending a questionnaire or
undertaking an interview (other than casual off the
record conversations with family or friends…).
This may also apply to asking for technical data from
people…
AEM Dissertation Launch 35
You will need to fill in some forms..
It is a student’s own responsibility to complete the following
forms in accordance to the guidelines on the CANVAS course.
Some of these need to be submitted by a particular date OR
before a particular event…
In ROUGH order:

Documentation Required
Your Project Assignments page may look something like this….
(Check with your Convenor).
AEM Dissertation Launch 39
Laboratory Experiments – requirements
If you will need to use the Laboratories – including the Civil
Engineering Lab – you may need to obtain some materials OR
gain access to a particular piece of equipment. You may need
an induction course to use equipment (this is normal).
Mark Carter is the Civil Engineering Technical Manager. Please
work with your supervisor to advise Mark on your laboratory
needs as soon as possible to ensure that materials are
available and equipment is available.
For some other types of equipment, please discuss the best
approach with your supervisor as soon as possible.
AEM Dissertation Launch 40
Supervision – requirement
It is primarily the student’s responsibility to book meetings with their
supervisor to discuss progress and ask for specific approval of forms,
questionnaires etc.
A minimum of 1 meeting per month must be undertaken and Project
Meeting Records submitted (
see Canvas assignments).
A student (and also their supervisor if the supervisor prefers) must make
notes on the Meeting Record. Each record is to be signed electronically by
Student and Supervisor and submitted to CANVAS. (e.g. you could pass a
completed electronic form (e.g. Word) to your supervisor – which they can
save as a pdf…).
TIP:
Arrange the date of your next meeting within your meeting!
AEM Dissertation Launch 41
Supervision – Meetings
It is envisaged that Zoom and face to face will be used to undertake 1 to 1 progress
meetings. Organise with your supervisor to put a meeting invite into the UoB
outlook calendar. This may mean that you ask your supervisor to send you a calendar
invite (face-to-face or with Zoom or Teams).
Due to the Covid-19 situation other methods may be needed. Please work with
your supervisor to overcome any issues with contacting between different
countries.
An alternative method may be required (e.g. Zoom?), but personal phone
numbers should not be given out.
Please also remember that you may be in a different time zone to your
supervisor if you are still working remotely.
You may need to send documents to your supervisor before a meeting and ask
them to do a screen share with you to discuss in detail.
Please contact the student office if you have problems organising meetings with
your supervisor.
AEM Dissertation Launch 42
Support – Supervisor +…
It is not common, but occasionally personal challenges arise.
If you need further support, contact your supervisor for advice
and/or Engineering Welfare.
Your supervisor may recommend that you speak to Engineering Welfare
(
[email protected])
AEM Dissertation Launch 43

dissertation should have?
A) Up to 15
B) 16 to 20
C) 21 or more
AEM Dissertation Launch 44
Question 7
Do you need to have read every reference that you
cite?
A) Yes – absolutely in detail

C) No
AEM Dissertation Launch 45
Writing Up
Write up as you go along in a draft form. Get all the information down, then refine
it to get it into the word count limit as needed.
You must not
plagiarise!
Make note of all the references you look at (it is very difficult sometimes to then try
and find them again). Follow the guidance on referencing including the
HARVARD
style.
Experiment with different methods of presenting results.
Use the
Academic Skills Centre to help you write. Maybe even use a professional
proof reading service (but they
MUST NOT write your dissertation for you!!)
Interview (transcripts) and Questionnaire data gathered (Raw data) needs to be
placed in the appendix. Other technical data also should be placed in the appendix.
(Note that an examiner may not look at the appendix, but the Raw data does need
to be there!).
[Remember: Show how you meet your Aims and Objectives in your conclusion…]
AEM Dissertation Launch 46
Question 9
What is the best way to present results?
A) Tables only
B) Bar charts only
C) Line graphs only
D) Paragraphs only
E) It depends on what I
want to highlight to
the reader about the
results!
AEM Dissertation Launch 47
Question 8
What is the best way to present results?
A) Tables only
B) Bar charts only

This is Masters level:
Please analyse your data yourself.
Familiarise yourself with tools such as Excel, and
draw your own charts from your own data.
Consider looking for relationships in your data
It is best NOT to use the “charts” created by the
Forms apps/websites (Google / Forms etc.) as often
parts are truncated on the chart OR something odd
is seen!
