For this week’s paper, address the following question: Mysticism often features accounts of the supernatural, including angels, demons, and magic. How does belief (or disbelief) in these phenomena change the life of the religious practitioner, and the nature of the religion they practice? Can two people, one of whom believes in these phenomena, and the other of whom does not, really be said to belong to the “same” religion (in this case, Judaism)? Discuss with reference to the differences between Jewish mysticism and Jewish philosophy as described in our readings.
